Congratulations to this year's recipient of the Emily Burrows Award, aleksiah. aleksiah is an Adelaide-based solo pop artist, with recent support slots with Lime Cordiale and Teenage Dads, and is midway through her national debut tour.
She swept up accolades at the recent South Australian Music Awards, winning in an additional three categories: Best New Artist, Best Solo Artist and Most Popular Pop Artist. She was additionally nominated for Best Release and Best Cover Art.
Each year an up-and-coming South Australian musician or band is recognised for their potential and awarded $5,000 to support their professional development. The award was instituted in 2001 in memory of Emily Burrows, a former APRA AMCOS membership representative and compliance officer, who worked tirelessly to support and encourage South Australian songwriters and composers. The award was established following her tragic, accidental death in 2000.
“I am so incredibly grateful and honoured to receive this award. Developing artists are often overlooked and awards like these help support and uplift the journey that we need to undertake to hone our craft and make the best possible music. Because of this award I’m now able to put on more shows next year that I wouldn’t have been able to, so I can continue growing my presence on stage, which is a really big goal of mine. I cannot wait to see what’s in store for me next year, if it’s anything like 2024, I know I’m going to love it."
