This is the first Contemporary Music Strategy 2025–2034 since the establishment of the NSW music development office, Sound NSW
Demonstrates a strong commitment to NSW’s music creators, including the 29,000 APRA AMCOS members
APRA AMCOS commends the NSW Government for delivering its first Contemporary Music Strategy since the establishment of the NSW music development office Sound NSW.
Dean Ormston, CEO of APRA AMCOS, says: “The ten-year NSW contemporary music strategy is important recognition of the critical role music plays in the state’s cultural, social and economic fabric. It is an important step forward to support the development of a thriving industry and build NSW's role as an engine room for Australian music.
"The strategy also demonstrates a strong commitment to NSW’s music creators, including the 29,000 APRA AMCOS songwriter, composer and music publisher members who contribute so much to the state’s creative and economic life.
"By addressing key challenges and opportunities, the strategy highlights the government’s commitment to building a music ecosystem that benefits creators, audiences and communities alike. The focus on sustainability and innovation provides a strong foundation for growth over the next decade."
The delivery of this strategy aligns closely with the establishment of Music Australia by the Australian Government last year, creating strong national and state-level foundations to advance the music sector. Together, these developments ensure a coordinated approach to supporting creators, fostering talent, and positioning NSW as a leader in the national and global music landscape.
Ormston adds: “We welcome the strategy’s ambition to position NSW as a global music destination. NSW has the potential to lead on the world stage, showcasing incredible talent and strengthening its reputation as a cultural hub.
"APRA AMCOS has developed an ambitious goal for Australia to become a net exporter of music within the next decade. This strategy for NSW can support that ambition, enabling NSW songwriters and composers to find new audiences globally while building sustainable careers and creating economic value at home.
"What will be important is to now expand the strategy’s scope to foster cross-industry collaboration with areas such as screen and games development to enhance NSW’s creative ecosystem and drive innovation.
“Local government will also need to be consulted closely to foster the development of music precincts, build local capacity, and create vibrant stages for music across the state. Their support will be key to delivering the strategy’s goals."
APRA AMCOS looks forward to working with the NSW Government and other stakeholders to implement the strategy and deliver lasting benefits for songwriters, performers, and audiences in NSW.
