Statement from APRA Chair Jenny Morris MNZM OAM

Story Published Wednesday 13 September 2023

From singer, songwriter and APRA Chair Jenny Morris MNZM OAM:

As a songwriter and artist, I feel humbled by the extraordinary generosity Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander colleagues have shown me over the years. They are some of the most iconic music makers and story tellers of our times. To be able to listen to their artistry, which they have been perfecting for, quite literally, the longest time, is inspiring.

It is incredibly important to me that their voices are heard, not just for this generation but for the generations after that. I believe there must be a serious mechanism that ensures that our nation protects, supports, and celebrates the oldest uninterrupted culture on earth. This is why I support a Yes Vote at this referendum.

I know there are many views from across the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music community which I will always acknowledge and respect. I share with you the conviction that our nation must find real and tangible ways to support a self-determined future for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Jenny Morris, Chair APRA Board is a signatory of Music For The Voice.
