APRA AMCOS’ 321 Sessions provide opportunities for songwriters to hone their co-writing skills, through connecting, collaborating and creating with their peers in a low-pressure environment.
Since a first iteration in 2014 as an opportunity for BIGSOUND showcasing artists to forge new writing relationships in downtime between showcases, APRA AMCOS has regularly delivered 321 Sessions online, in person, and in partnership with music industry conferences and festivals across Australia.
321 Sessions are open to APRA AMCOS members who have demonstrated an interest in developing their co-writing skills; with pairings based on a transparent application process involving the writer outlining their songwriting experience, genre skill-sets and instrumentation.
Applications are assessed and writing groups are selected by a ‘curator’, typically a mid-career to established level songwriter with co-writing experience, selected by the co-presenting organisation based. In addition to the primary indicators (songwriting experience, genre/s skill-set, instrumentation), it is recommended that wherever possible the co-presenting organisation and ‘curator’ also factor secondary indicators such as age, gender, ethnicity, location and session time preferences when programming.
Upon advice from the ‘curator’ and/or co-presenting organisation, an APRA AMCOS representative then contact and introduce successful applicants.
For in-person 321 Sessions events, minimum technical requirements would be two medium sized rooms with minimal external noise, soft lighting and a comfortable space for songwriters to convene. It’s common for writers to bring their own equipment (e.g guitars, DAWs, synths); however where possible it’s recommended that these spaces are equipped with studio monitors, a control keyboard and an external sound card.
For 321 Sessions events held exclusively online, after the writers are introduced it is their responsibility to arrange a convenient time to connect for their session.
