We are saddened at the news of the passing of Yunupingu.

Dr Yunupingu was a dearly beloved advocate, fearless leader and renowned musician and songwriter.

The Yolŋu leader campaigned for Land Rights, and Aboriginal rights, which is celebrated through his music.

His credits include his work with his brother's band Yothu Yindi on tracks like 'Mabo', along with his contribution to 'The Gurindji Blues'.

He became an APRA member in 1992.

“We remember him for his fierce leadership, and total strength for Yolŋu and for Aboriginal people throughout Australia. He lived by our laws always,“ his family shared in a statement.

“Yunupiŋu lived his entire life on his land, surrounded by the sound of bilma (clapsticks), yidaki (didgeridoo) and the manikay (sacred song) and dhulang (sacred designs) of our people.”

“He was born on our land, he lived all his life on our land and he died on our land secure in the knowledge that his life’s work was secure.”

Vale Yunupingu.
