Vale Bill Armstrong AM
We were saddened to hear of the passing of pioneering recording engineer, producer and broadcaster, Bill Armstrong AM.
Armstrong helped shape the Australian music industry for more than 70 years. Following his early work in innovative recording technology, he established Bill Armstrong Sound in 1949, before moving into radio production for the ABC and W&G Records. In 1965 he founded Armstrong Studios, which became one of Australia's most influential recording facilities.
Over the decades, the studios played a significant role in Australian music with artists including Daddy Cool, John Farnham, Russell Morris, Skyhooks and The Seekers recording there. It also trained generations of Australian engineers, producers and technicians.
Beyond recording, Armstrong was instrumental in broadcasting, helping to establish Australia’s first commercial FM radio station, EON FM, in 1979. He remained a passionate advocate for preserving the nation's musical heritage throughout his life.
A member of APRA AMCOS since 1959, Armstrong was presented with the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music at the 2006 APRA Music Awards. He was also appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2015 and leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that continues to resonate across the music community.
