The APRA Professional Development Awards are conducted every two years by APRA in conjunction with music organisations and institutions involved in the representation or education of Australian music writers, offering cash and recognition to music writers in the early stages of their careers.
In 2015 , the Smugglers of Light initiative formed part of the PDAs, providing a promising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music or media practitioner a grant of $12,000.

The Smugglers of Light foundation has been set up in memory of Eli Westlake aged 21, who was tragically killed in Sydney on 7 June 2008.
