APRA AMCOS CEO Dean Ormston is one of 20 leaders from the creative industries and academia invited to join the Steering Committee of the Attorney-General’s Copyright and Artificial Intelligence Reference Group (CAIRG).

The reference group was made official in December 2023, following a series of roundtable discussions, and the steering committee recently announced.

The CAIRG is made up of 61 organisations across tech, higher education and other peak creator rights bodies including ARIA, Copyright Agency and Screenrights. The AG’s website states that the CAIRG “has been established to facilitate engagement, information sharing and open discussion between government and non-government sectors on current and emerging copyright-AI issues to better prepare Australia for copyright challenges emerging from AI.”

No doubt, it’s a big task ahead, with the group working on a range of issues at the intersection of copyright and AI. Up first? “The initial focus of our consultation with the CAIRG will be on the use of copyright material as inputs for AI systems.”

Dean shared a message with members recently on how we are working to ensure a music creator future, and calling for three Cs.
