Four-day songwriting program in Melbourne curated by The Temper Trap with songwriters from Baker’s Eddy, Middle Kids, The Moving Stills and more
The first Gudinski SongHubs will honour the late, great Michael Gudinski as a part of the celebrations of 100 years of APRA
APRA AMCOS’s flagship collaborative songwriting program, SongHubs, has announced its first ever Gudinski SongHubs in honour of the late, great Michael Gudinski as a part of its celebrations of 100 years of APRA.
The four-day program is taking place from 24-27 February at Melbourne’s Bakehouse Studios, curated by The Temper Trap and featuring some of Australia’s most exciting bands and producers including Ciarann Babbington (Baker’s Eddy), Hannah Joy (Middle Kids), Ross James, Selve, Sunsick Daisy and The Moving Stills.
Honouring the legacy of Michael Gudinski and his profound influence on Australian bands and songwriters, the program celebrates the collaborative spirit and bold vision that helped shape the rise of The Temper Trap. The band held dedicated writing sessions at Gudinski’s Mount Macedon home while developing their debut album Conditions, reflecting the culture of support, trust and ambition Michael championed throughout the band's career.
The track cemented the band’s status as one of the world’s defining indie-rock acts, earning them the prestigious Peer-Voted Song of the Year title at the 2010 APRA Music Awards.
Toby Dundas from The Temper Trap, explains: "Michael Gudinski was such an important part of the Temper Trap story, and it’s a real privilege to be a part of the first SongHubs in his name.
“MG was a real champion of young Australian bands and with APRA AMCOS turning the success of the SongHubs camps towards a more band-focused format, it will be a great platform for the next generation of artists."
The Mushroom Group Chief Executive, Matt Gudinski, adds: "It’s no secret my dad loved Australian music and always gave artists the space to take risks and be bold. Working with APRA AMCOS on SongHubs has been a pleasure. This initiative reflects his unwavering drive to support and collaborate with songwriters, providing a platform and culture for artists to thrive."
Since its inception in 2013, SongHubs has provided opportunities for over 2,000 Australian and New Zealand songwriters across over 30 locations worldwide, pairing them with local, national and global creatives in a collaborative, professional studio setting.
It’s evolved from a straight-forward writing camp to a highly sought after collaborative writing program, providing participants with new skills and connections to help build their career and produce commercially successful music.
To date, more than 6,000 tracks have been produced in several different languages (including Brazilian, Indian, Korean, Māori and First Nations languages) from collaborators including Briggs, Chaii, Courtney Barnett, GFlip, Lindsay Rimes, Sarah Aarons and Troye Sivan.
Dean Ormston, CEO of APRA AMCOS, concludes: “SongHubs provides a collaborative experience like no other, giving songwriters the unique opportunity to spend time with each other in a supportive environment to share, create and hopefully release commercially successful new music together.
“As we celebrate APRA’s 100th year of supporting songwriters, composers and music publishers, it seemed a fitting tribute to honour one of Australian music’s most influential people by launching the Gudinski SongHubs.
“Michael was such a passionate supporter of Aussie songwriters and it’s been wonderful working with Matt Gudinski and Linda Bosidis in making this happen in our 100th year. We can’t wait to hear what comes out of it!”
