We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of acclaimed saxophonist and long-time music community member, Andy Bickers.

Bickers was best known for his role as a saxophonist with Cold Chisel, performing with the band for over 30 years and becoming an integral part of their live sound through powerful performances on songs including “My Baby”, “Rising Sun” and “Saturday Night”.

Born in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand, Bickers established himself as one of the country's most respected saxophonists during the 1980s before relocating to Australia. Following an early stint with Jimmy Barnes’ touring band, he went on to become one of the country’s most sought-after session and touring musicians.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Bickers performed and recorded with an extraordinary range of artists including Midnight Oil, Silverchair, ICEHOUSE, Hoodoo Gurus and You Am I. He also performed alongside international heavyweights like Don Henley and The Eagles.

A member of APRA AMCOS since 2023, he made a lasting contribution to Australian and New Zealand music, both on stage and in the studio. One of his last performances was as part of a special Rob Hirst tribute at the 2026 APRA Music Awards in April.

Dean Ormston, CEO of APRA AMCOS, says: “Andy was a deeply respected member of the music community whose playing helped shape the sound of some of this country’s most iconic artists. We had the great pleasure of hearing him perform at the recent APRA Music Awards and know that his impact will be felt for many years to come. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and many members who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him.”
