Vale James Valentine
We were saddened to learn of the passing of beloved ABC Sydney Afternoons host, broadcaster, writer and musician James Valentine, who passed away at age 64 from cancer.
Before embarking on his broadcast career, James studied classical saxophone and was a busy touring musician. He joined APRA in 1987 and was a member of the Models and performed with artists including Kate Ceberano and Wendy Matthews. As recently as last year, James was hosting and playing sax in his ‘Upbeat Revue’ live shows.
He was the host of ABC Sydney’s Afternoons radio talk-back show for more 20 years and worked across the ABC on TV and radio for over three decades. His connection with Afternoons listeners and his ‘Drive’ time colleague Richard Glover, endeared him to audiences.
He announced his cancer diagnosis on-air in 2024, and listeners followed his journey and warmly welcomed him back on the radio for periods.
A champion of jazz and a composer of a theme song or two, James also served as host to the APRA Screen Music Awards in 2004 and 2005.
Last weekend, he was appointed Member of the Order of Australia for his services to broadcasting, music and the arts.
“Throughout James’ incredible career, he brought optimism, creativity and wit to whatever he did. His unwavering support for jazz and live music was such a big part of who he was and we are grateful that he shared that with millions of listeners over the years. We send our condolences to James’ family,” said Dean Ormston, APRA AMCOS CEO.
