Vale Johnny Young
We were saddened to hear of the passing of singer, songwriter, producer and broadcaster Johnny Young.
A beloved figure in Australian entertainment, Young enjoyed a career spanning more than six decades both as a performer and mentor to generations of Australian artists.
He first rose to prominence in the 1960s with chart-topping hits including “Step Back” in 1966 before establishing himself as one of Australia's most successful songwriters. He penned a number of classic hits including “The Real Thing” for Russell Morris, which was later included in APRA’s Top 30 Australian songs of all time in 2001, and “Smiley” for Ronnie Burns. He became a member of APRA AMCOS in 1970.
In 1971, he created and hosted the iconic television series Young Talent Time, which ran for 17 years and launched the careers of numerous Australian artists and performers including Dannii Minogue, Debra Byrne and Tina Arena. Through the program, he became a champion of emerging talent, and he leaves behind an extraordinary legacy which will continue to resonate throughout Australian music.
